Best Fireworks Displays: Fourth of July

  Where should you go see the best fireworks displays in the San Francisco Bay Area? Fisherman's Wharf is San Francisco's premier spot to celebrate America's Independence Day holiday. Visitors can typically enjoy free, fabulous entertainment throughout the Wharf, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display over San Francisco Bay.



TRANSPORTATION

We strongly recommend that you take advantage of the extended public transportation services to enjoy Fisherman’s Wharf and The City of San Francisco’s fireworks display over the Bay. After the fireworks show, please expect delays leaving the Fisherman’s Wharf area.

Reroutes, extra service for Fireworks at the Wharf

The annual Fourth of July Fireworks and Music Festival along the northern waterfront will take place between noon and 9:30 p.m. Fireworks will be set off from a barge off Pier 39 and from the Municipal Pier, Aquatic Park, and beginning at 9:30 p.m.

Accessibility
The
8X and Embarcadero Shuttle routes provide the most level nearby access to the Pier 39 fireworks.


Pre-event details

Muni will provide shuttle bus service
to the waterfront area from 2 until 8:30 p.m.
  • From Caltrain To Embarcadero and Bay.
  • From Ferry Building To Embarcadero and Bay.
  • From Van Ness and Market To Van Ness and Chestnut.
F-MARKET & WHARVES:

The
F Line will terminate service at Steuart Street and Don Chee Way starting at 2 p.m. Use pre-event diesel shuttles from the Ferry Building to Embarcadero and Bay.

Other reroutes
are scheduled to start at 3 p.m.

Reroutes will last until the streets are clear, possibly as late as midnight.

Pre-event regular service
  • Powell-Mason Cable Car from Powell and Market to Taylor and Bay
  • 8X Bay Shore Express from City College to Powell and Bay
  • 30 Stockton from Caltrain to Broderick and Beach via Union. Some trips may terminate at Union and Columbus.
  • 45 Union/Stockton from Caltrain to Union and Lyon via Union.
  • 47 Van Ness from Caltrain to Van Ness and Chestnut
  • 49 Van Ness/Mission from City College to Van Ness and Union
Vehicles will attempt to reach these locations. As the area gets crowded late in the day, vehicles may not be able to reach the exact location. They will get as close as possible.

  • 8X Bay Shore Express from Powell and Lombard to City College
  • 30 Stockton from Chestnut and Van Ness to Caltrain via Union.
  • 47 Van Ness from Van Ness and Chestnut to Caltrain
  • 49 Van Ness/Mission from Van Ness and Chestnut to City College
Boarding locations may change based on traffic conditions at the time. Check with Muni personnel at Embarcadero and Bay and at Polk and Francisco for exact boarding areas. Last shuttle from the wharf to Caltrain leaves at 11:20 p.m. The last Caltrain train leaves San Francisco at midnight.

Muni Metro will be operating extra post-event service to Embarcadero and Caltrain. This service will run until approximately 12:30 a.m.

On the Fourth of July, SamTrans will operate on a regular Sunday schedule, and on Monday, July 5 bus service will operate on an abbreviated weekday schedule.

July 4, Caltrain will operate on a regular Sunday schedule with extra service for Independence Day Fireworks.

Following the fireworks, the first special train will depart from the San Francisco station at 11:15 p.m., or when full, and express to San Carlos, and then make all local weekend stops to the San Jose Diridon station. Two special trains will leave at 11:30 p.m. and 12:01 a.m. and make all local weekend stops to San Jose Diridon. The last regularly scheduled train will depart at 9:15 p.m. and make all local weekend stops to San Jose Diridon.

On July 5, Caltrain will operate a regular Saturday schedule, with two special round-trip limited express trains. One of the special trains will provide round-trip service from Gilroy. View the Modified Schedule at http://www.caltrain.com/timetable/Holiday_Service.html

During the July 4th weekend, Aquarium of the Bay will host Tattoo Trivia, a fun and interactive experience for visitors of all ages. The Aquarium’s naturalists, stationed in locations throughout the nature center, will be armed with animal-focused trivia questions and special rewards for those who answer the questions correctly: temporary, red, white and blue-colored, animal-themed tattoos! Test your underwater knowledge, learn new facts and see just how many tattoos you can fit on your arm.
